In preparation for the event, Sawyer competed at the North West Regional Championships on Friday.
Sawyer's preparations had been set back after he suffered a MCL strain during a recent soccer game.
However, the injury did little to stop Sawyer from claiming victory in the high jump at the regional championships.
The five-day long nationals competition will present Sawyer a new challenge, as it will be the first time he has competed on a synthetic track.
The Gunnedah Health and Fitness Co member has been using a set of high jump mats from his coach Maryanne Perkins on his front lawn to help prepare for the championships.
The nationals will run from September 18 to 23.
