Ellen Mitchell shared holiday snaps and stories of her trip to Perth by caravan and members discussed what they learnt from horticulturist Sandra Ross.

Mrs Ross was the guest speaker at Quirindi Garden Club's birthday celebration and spoke about the power of plants. She is the wife of Graham Ross from Better Homes and Gardens.

Member Coralie Howe said it was "a great day" and "full of information".

"Mrs Ross mentioned things to be doing for the autumn, winter, spring and summer months and gave out lots of tips on fertilizing especially bulbs," Ms Howe said.

"The daffodils need to be fertilized three times, when starting to come up, again when flowering and also when dying down. This will promote plenty of flowers the following year."

The raffle was won by Sue Walker and Rosemary Eveleigh won the potting mix. In the flower competition, Ellen Mitchell placed first, Esme Gardener placed second and Ann Penrose placed third. In the vegetables competition, Fay Byrne placed first, Marg Hill placed second and Ann Penrose placed third.

After the meeting, members drove out to Curlewis to visit the property of Des and Ruth Hatch.

The Hatches have a "wonderful" collection of dendrobium orchids and showed the members how to pot and care for the plants.

Upcoming events include the Gunnedah Presbyterian Church's flower show on September 14, Gunnedah Anglican Church's mini fete on September 21, and Bilby Blooms' open day at Binnaway on September 28.

The next meeting is on Monday, September 23. Lunch is at the Lions' Park and then members will visit a nursery and Mrs Gardener's garden.
