The estimated $6.25 million 22km-long concrete walkway will run between Quirindi War Memorial and Werris Creek War Memorial Swimming Pool, and will acknowledge and honour the soldiers who were part of the battles along the Kokoda Track.

The track would take the back route between the towns, running along Bells Gate Rd and Back Werris Creek Rd.

The feasibility study, at a cost of $115,000, is necessary as a stepping stone for the project to seek grant funding from the state and federal governments, the RSL, public and private companies, and individuals.

LPSC's Doug Hawkins said fundraisers were being held to help pay the study fee, including an already booked out Rugby and Kokoda Long Luncheon, which would feature vintage Wallabies players, a former All Black and a Kokoda historian.

"Government officials are waiting on the feasibility study. Once the study is done and the requirements and costs and everything are known, we can then apply for separate government grants to build it," Cr Hawkins said.

"The engineering people need to give us the details on what needs to be done to prepare the grounds. The whole scope of the project needs to be fleshed out so all the costs are there available for the end figure."
