Sawyer's coach Maryanne Perkins said the 10-year-old had overcome several obstacles on his way to the state-wide competition.
"Hayden suffered a strained MCL injury playing soccer in the lead up to the event," Perkins told the Namoi Valley Independent.
"However, despite the interrupted preparation, Hayden did enough on the day to qualify for nationals."
The stellar performance now means Sawyer will represent NSW in the under-10 boys high jump at the national PSSA athletics championships in Darwin from September 18 to 23.
