The current playground will be closed for the construction period of Livvi's Place Inclusive Playground, which is expected to be completed by Christmas.
"Construction is expected to be completed in late December - so the park will be a great Christmas present for the community and the working group who have worked to realise this amazing project," Gunnedah Shire Council's chief engineer Dan Noble said.
"The site is being accessed through the carpark on Tempest Street and impact on traffic is expected to be minimal."

The concept of an inclusive playground was driven by Gunnedah mum Ashley Bender who started a petition in 2013.
The detailed design has been a collaborative process between the Inclusive Playground Working Group, Gunnedah's Stewart Surveys, the council and the Touched by Olivia Foundation.
The main elements of the playground will include a treehouse tower, a sensory garden walk, a flying fox and a specially designed swing.
The playground will be financed by $850,000 from the state government's Stronger Country Communities program and a community contribution of $650,000.
The official sod-turning for the project will be held at 11am on August 16.
