The centre's only remaining doctor Jennifer Hunter finished on Tuesday, but the clinic doors will remain open with nurses available to "carry out non-urgent duties".

Mackellar board member Gae Swain said while they were "unable to source a locum" to take over from Tuesday, Dr Alice Wu will be on site from August 5 until August 16.

After this date, there will be another locum on duty.

"There will be another doctor covering two weeks [after August 16] and possibly another two from then, we're not sure if it's the same doctor or another one," Mrs Swain said.

"We're still working very hard to source a permanent doctor."

From July 23 until August 5, nurses will take care of patients, and the centre will remain open from 8.30am-5.30pm.

Mackellar Care Services now has a new chief executive officer, after Sandra Strong retired from the position.

Mrs Strong held the chief executive officer position from 2009.

Wayne Snelson began in the position on Monday, and will be a permanent employee of Mackellar organisation.

The staffing crisis at the centre has shocked community members with Gunnedah mayor Jamie Chaffey, Gunnedah Shire Council and Parkes MP Mark Coulton also working behind the scenes to find a solution to keep the doors open.

The clinic's history has been fraught with difficulty in recent years, closing in July 2017 after its last doctor left.

Mackellar Care took over the Gunnedah Rural Health Centre in November 2017 and re-named it Mackellar Rural Health Centre.

The land is owned and leased from the state government.

The clinic was built in 2012 with funding from the state and federal governments, community fundraisers and mining companies.
