As the deadline for action looms, the board has told the NVI it has been liaising with the NSW Rural Doctors Network (RDN) to ensure the centre can still take patients.

RDN's chief executive officer Richard Colbran said the board "approached RDN for assistance" in finding a replacement doctor, with Dr Jennifer Hunter set to leave on July 23.

"Mackellar Care enjoys a strong reputation in the Gunnedah region and RDN is pleased to have the opportunity to bring its expertise and knowledge to the table to collaborate with the board on developing both short and long-term options for the centre," Mr Colbran said.

"RDN has a long history of working with the Gunnedah community on its primary healthcare services and is committed to seeing the town well-serviced by quality healthcare professionals."

Mackellar board member Gae Swain said the board was "thankful for the RDN's support" in helping them keep the clinic open.

"They really are the experts in sourcing doctors who are interested in rural medicine so we're very thankful for their support," Mrs Swain said.

"We're working very hard on it and we're so committed to keeping it open."

The NVI asked Mrs Swain why Dr Hunter was leaving but she was unable to give a reason.

"She's a great medical practitioner and we were very thankful to have her in our centre and wish her well for the future," she said.

The staffing crisis at the centre has shocked community members with Gunnedah mayor Jamie Chaffey, council and Parkes MP Mark Coulton also working behind the scenes to find a solution to keep the doors open.
