Gunnedah Jockey Club (GJC) is hoping to merge the annual festival with the inaugural Gunnedah Hay and Harvest Festival, a showcase of regional produce in March 2020.

In April, the club asked Gunnedah Shire Council to consider combining the two festivals to "create a larger, more vibrant and collaborative event".

The request is detailed in July's council papers by planning and environmental services director Andrew Johns who recommended that councillors vote in favour of the request and create a working group consisting of jockey club members, council staff, and community members.

"Both festivals share a common vision: to deliver a high quality event that our community can be proud of; to celebrate and showcase our local growers and produce; to boost our shire's drought affected economy and to demonstrate all that the region has to offer," Mr Johns wrote.

"Each event was designed to be a not-to-be-missed opportunity for visitors to experience the warmth and friendliness of the Gunnedah shire."

If the merge goes ahead, the council may relocate the festival to the Gunnedah Riverside Racecourse.

Porchetta was a highly-anticipated Italian food festival but after seven years, the committee called it a day in 2016 because of a lack of volunteers.

The jockey club had plans to revive the cultural event after receiving a $20,000 state government grant in 2018, but has been unable to get it off the ground.

Gunnedah's councillors will vote on the request at Wednesday's ordinary meeting.
