Local Therese Rankmore entered an original design in the pieced quilt professional category and was presented with a certificate and ribbon. There were 25 other entries vying for placings.
"I'm really pleased. To get a second in Sydney is a big deal. This is the seventh quilt I've entered in there over the years and this was my first placement," Mrs Rankmore said.
"The one that actually beat me in that category went on to win best of show. It was incredible. It was well-deserved."

Mrs Rankmore's quilt is 200cm square, features multiple fabrics and took several months to complete. The fabrics were purchased in Japan a number of years ago by Mrs Rankmore's sister. The quilt received second place in the Canberra Quilters Annual Members Exhibition last year.
"I have to find a home for it here. I can't give this one away. It will end up pride of place somewhere," she said.
The keen sewer is "working on several quilts at the moment" and will enter the Sydney Quilt Show again next year with something new.
She is looking forward to quilting alongside her granddaughters when they visit these holidays. She taught the girls to sew and they both gained first places in the Gunnedah Show in April.
Ms Rankmore has sewn most of her life but learnt patchwork when she was teaching at Gunnedah TAFE in 1985. She finds inspiration in new ideas and fabrics and teaches locally through her business Gumnut Gear, which she set up at home in 1992.
