The museum is fighting against laws to make their extensive collection of firearms "permanently inoperable", as they argue it would mean "defacing pieces of history".

Mr Bacon questioned Mr Anderson's timing, saying he was slow to make contact with the museum members.

"The Minister for Better Regulation was made aware of the museum's plight in March of this year but has failed to act on their behalf," he said.

"Here is a chance for Kevin Anderson to stand up against the Liberal Party and tell them they got it wrong."

But the Tamworth MP said he had written to the Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott and was "working on this issue".

"[Mr Elliott] has instructed the NSW Firearms Registry to look at drafting an amendment legislation for a more balanced approach for museums and war memorials to display military weapons," Mr Anderson said.

"I'm all for these museums and RSL clubs displaying military memorabilia ... it's part of our history. If they need to be made permanently inoperable then we need to find the legislation that balances that so that they can be displayed."

The Gunnedah branch of the NSW Farmers discussed the issue at a meeting on Thursday night, and president James Jackson said the group backed the museum.

"Essentially the branch supports the idea that they should be able to go back to the museum. It's a critical part of history," Mr Jackson said.
