This year's competitive art exhibition has attracted more than 500 entries with painting, photography, pottery, sculpture and children's artwork.

Event organiser Jane Harris said the focus this year is to be family-friendly.

"We've got some exciting child-friendly art classes lined up over the weekend plus markets, live music, fireworks and an extensive workshop program on offer," she said.

There's everything from jewelry making, digital art, photography, water colour and print making workshops on offer at the festival, suited to all abilities.

There's an art and craft display at Barraba Clay Pan, a Vintage Volkswagen Show, a Show and Shine motorcycle show and a lantern walk on Saturday evening, which kids can create their own lantern for.

Last year, winning works from Gunnedah included Passing Showers by Maree Kelly, Tree Cat by Julie Laurie and Portrait of Man by youngster Julian Heath.
