Jennifer Bower was sworn in as the new president at the club's annual general meeting on Saturday night.
The Boggabri woman said she was "very pleased" to be taking the reins.
"For a long time Gunnedah Lions didn't have women and we do now so that's great," Mrs Bower said.
"I'm very pleased to be doing it; it's a great thing that the club has women."

It was a special moment for Mrs Bower when her husband Phil, past Lions district governor, pinned the president's badge on her jacket.
It was also Mr Bower who inducted his wife when she first became a Lions member in Curlewis 17 years ago.
"It's a husband and wife thing," Mrs Bower said.
"It's quite unusual, I don't know of that ever happening before."
It's not the first time the Boggabri woman has made history, becoming the first female president of the Lions Club of Boggabri as well.

She joined the Gunnedah branch two years ago, and said she was excited to work with the local club's members in the coming year.
"I had so many people give me their best wishes, [and it] was very nice to see all of the volunteers," Mrs Bower said.
"I'm looking forward to getting cooperation ... from them. It's a very harmonious club and it's going well."

Past president Neville Adams said he was "delighted to hand [the presidency] over to such a worthy person".
"She's wonderful. I know she'll do a great job, and I know she will also have the utmost support from the members of the club," Mr Adams said.
"She's a tremendously qualified Lions person because she's been on cabinet for some years."
Incoming board members for the club include Jennifer Bower (president), Paul Hope (treasurer), Debbie Harkins (secretary), Stuart Muddle (membership chairman), Ian Harley (lion tamer), Martin Gurney (bulletin editor), Bob Mansfield (two-year director), Jim Noon (two-year director), Graham Howes (one-year director), and Jos Loughnan (tail twister).
The club celebrated its 60th anniversary last year.
