The council announced Daracon as the successful tenderer for the Wolseley Park project on Friday, with work to start in the next few months.
Dubbed Livvi's Place Inclusive Playground, the project was inspired by Gunnedah mum Ashley Bender who started a petition in 2013 for an all-inclusive play space.
Gunnedah Shire Mayor Jamie Chaffey said he was pleased construction would soon be under way.
"This will be an amazing play space designed to cater for all children and their families," he said.
"This project is a huge win for the community. It's unique for a town the size of Gunnedah to be home to such a feature.
"It will be a little while in the making, but the playground will be a great and imaginative recreation area for both Gunnedah residents and visitors."
The Inclusive Playground Working Group and Gunnedah's Stewart Surveys have worked with the council and the Touched by Olivia Foundation to cement the detailed design.
Main elements of the playground will include a treehouse tower, a sensory garden walk, a flying fox and a specially-designed swing.

The playground will be financed by $850,000 from the state government's Stronger Country Communities program and a community contribution of $650,000.
Gunnedah Shire Council's Chief Engineer Dan Noble said the existing playground at Wolseley Park would be closed will the project was carried out.
"We expect the project to be completed before Christmas. We understand many families use the park regularly so will be hosting some other activities in the park during the closure and will also be opening the Gunnedah Memorial Pool early to provide alternatives and minimise the inconvenience," he said.
The newly opened Donnelly Fields play equipment is an alternative while Wolseley Park is closed.
Gunnedah Country Markets will be relocated towards the end of the Conadilly Street block, near the rotunda, until construction is complete.
