At last week's ordinary meeting, councilllors voted to defer the works on Boundary Road and Bloomfield Street until Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) upgrades the Oxley Highway and Boundary Road intersection.

The council can't do the work until RMS authorises it and, because of RMS delays, has to carry the project into the new financial year.

An RMS spokesperson said roundabout project had been delayed by about a year because of property acquisition issues.

"Land acquisition required for the project to proceed has recently been finalised [and] early work for the project is expected to start in July, with major work to follow in August," they said.

The spokesperson said the roundabout would "improve safety and traffic efficiency" on the heavy vehicle route.

The council works include an upgrade of pavement and the installation of a kerb on Boundary Road, and the construction of a kerb on Bloomfield Street from Stanley Street to Boundary Road.

Bloomfield Street is currently undergoing an upgrade as part of a $4 million project to seal and strengthen the pavement over two years. The project is funded by the council and the state government's Fixing Country Roads program.

The upgrade started in April and will cater for high mass vehicles and pave the way for Gunnedah's second rail overpass, which is under construction.
