April was a productive month with the project team carrying out a 72-hour rail possession as part of the flood mitigation works for the new bridge.
An RMS spokesperson said Daracon and the RMS project team removed two redundant culverts on the western side of Blackjack Creek and install two new culverts on the eastern side of Blackjack Creek.
In the time period, 70 people worked in rotating shifts to carry out 1000 tonnes of excavation, place and compact 1300 tonnes of pavement material, place 1200 tonnes of pre-cast culverts, install 48 tonnes of wings walls (culvert openings), and remove and replace 75 metres of rail tracks. To complete the works, 15 plant items worked in close proximity and 130-tonne and 250-tonne cranes worked side-by-side.
Ms Sisson said the bridge girders would be manufactured in Newcastle soon and transported to site from September.
The road-over-rail bridge will enable an uninterrupted flow of traffic and provide a suitable route for heavy vehicles and easy access to all parts of town for emergency services.
The $62 million-dollar project is expected to be completed in mid-2021.
