Police are still investigating the cause of a car crash which occurred at about 9.40pm on Wednesday night on Porcupine Hill.
The car collided with a tree on the side of the road and subsequently caught alight in the engine bay and the cabin of the car.
Gunnedah Fire and Rescue and RFS extinguished the blaze within minutes, and the 21-year-old young male driver was treated on the scene by ambulance crews.
Gunnedah police sergeant Mark Benson said an 18-year-old passenger helped free the driver from the car before it was engulfed.
Sergeant Benson also said the passenger left the scene before emergency services arrived, but later presented himself to Gunnedah Hospital.
Police are yet to receive a statement from both of the young men.
