"Council has received a lot of feedback from the community about the Chandos and Barber streets intersection in regards to near misses with motorists and pedestrians," council's infrastructure services director Jeremy Bartlett said.
"The need for a roundabout became evident and council successfully applied for Black Spot [Program] funding, under the Safer Roads Program, to fund the project.
"Design work for the project has been completed and this week work on the roundabout commenced with cones and signs installed to test if the roundabout design will be fit for purpose."
Mr Bartlett said the project was estimated at $250,000 and included the installation of a "drive-over" roundabout, upgraded pram and disability ramps, enhanced lighting, asphalt-wearing surface, and traffic calming devices to address pedestrian safety.
He said the works would be staged and minor traffic delays could be expected during the estimated six weeks for completion. The lighting upgrade may take longer.
