"We're a little behind on caravans at this stage but we think it's probably because of the weather," he said on Tuesday.
"We think they'll probably pick up and be around the par of other years [and] we're expecting a lot to call in off the road.
"All the regulars are booked in. Some of them booked last year before they even left the place."
The event falls in the school holidays, which is a prime time for grandparents to bring their grandkids along for a sticky beak.
Mr Gilham said there was less of a focus on tours this year to concentrate numbers at the showground.
"Where we used to have a lot of tours go out over the weekend, we're trying to have more people on the ground for activities," he said.
Nearly all local associations are involved from pre-schools to Emerald Hill Association to Maules Creek Progress Association.
PawsUp will be back again this year and always proves popular with the crowds. The initiative is the "heart and soul" of BackTrack Youthworks and showcases agility and trust.
Mr Gillham said the drovers campfire features in BackTrack Boys, a documentary on the not-for-profit youth organistion, which will be screened to the campers over the weekend.
A full program will be available on the Boggabri Drovers Campfire website in the coming weeks.
