The period usually ends on March 31, however it has been extended to midnight on April 30.

Liverpool Range RFS acting manager Myles O'Reilly said this extension meant changes to fire permits.

"The extension means anyone wanting to light a fire in the Gunnedah, Liverpool Plains and Upper Hunter Local Government Area after 31 March 2019 will still require a fire permit," Mr O'Reilly said.

"Fire Permits are free and available from your local fire station or NSW RFS Fire Control Centre.

"As always, residents must also notify neighbouring land owners and the local fire authority 24 hours prior to burning."

Mr O'Reilly said the decision was made in consultation with the relevant local councils and local NSW RFS brigade captains.

"Our overriding concern is the safety of all Liverpool Range District residents," he said.

"Now is not the time for anyone to become complacent about the risk of bush fires."

He urged residents to know what they and their family would do if a fire was to threaten their home.

"When will you go, what will you take and where will you go? Ask yourself, how fireproof is your plan?"
