A ute was destroyed by fire on the Kamilaroi Highway last night, sparking a small grass fire.

A spokesperson for the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) said there was an emergency call at 8.45pm, and the Curlewis brigade responded, backed by the Piallaway brigade.

The RFS said when the crews arrived, the vehicle was alight and a small area of grass was also on fire. The driver was uninjured.
The crews were on the scene for 2-3 hours and the Piallaway brigade returned this morning to put out smoking "hot spots".
The RFS said the cause of the fire "hasn't been verified" but it was not being treated as suspicious.
"It’s believed the car started a fire in the grass after it pulled off the road but it’s unconfirmed," the RFS spokesperson said.
The RFS said it was a good reminder for locals to be "vigilant given the dry nature of vegetation".
"Fires will start easily in the current climate," the spokesperson said.
A very high fire danger rating is in place for the Gunnedah area and stretches all the way down to the Upper Hunter.
