Instead, diverse skills and a commitment to work hard are, according to ADF specialist career promoter Sergeant Paul Gallaway.
His team is travelling the north-west from today to talk to rural candidates about potential futures in defence.

They will be in Gunnedah for an information session on Thursday of next week, meeting with people about careers in the army, navy and air force.
He said, however, it was impossible to describe the perfect package when it came to a new recruit.
“You can’t pick an ideal candidate, because the job is so diverse and so is the workforce,” Sergeant Gallaway said.
“I love getting the men and women from the country: they are straightforward, straight-shooting and resilient.

“Country people are going through tough times at the moment, and they bring that resilience with them and there’s a lot of good skills they can take back to their community.”
Jobs in the defence force can range from cybersecurity to jet pilots, clerical staff and combat soldiers – nobody is expected to have prior knowledge but they need a drive to improve themselves, Sergeant Gallaway said.
