NSWNMA delegate Heather Franke said the association was aiming to get 10,000 signatures so the issue could be tabled in Parliament House.
"It's good to know we have people supporting it, but we still have to get 9500 more," Mrs Franke said on Tuesday.
The delegate said the petition could be found in many businesses around Gunnedah including Willow & Fli and Gunnedah Shire Library.
Jeff Bacon said he hoped community members would continue to support the petition.
“I hope that the people of Gunnedah see how much work we are putting into this and jump on board with the petition and help make this a reality," Mr Bacon said.
“While collecting signatures many residents tell me that Tamworth and Narrabri have got new hospitals, why not Gunnedah?"
A petition needs to have a minimum of 500 signatures before the Health Minister is required to respond.
