There were very few well finished grown steers or heifers, most of the grown heifers were plain in condition and pregnancy tested empty.
Producers are now well into the sell-off of future breeding stock. There were few well finished young cattle, with most on the lean side. Overall the quality of the offering was very mixed. The irregular buyers were in attendance, along with that extra Northern competition once again.
Market trends through the young cattle were cheaper, with limited demand from restockers. Vealer steers returning to the paddock sold to a cheaper trend of 12c to 16c/kg. The heifer portion were around 20c/kg cheaper.
Despite the low numbers, vealers to the trade also sold to cheaper trends of 10c to 20c/kg. Medium and heavy yearling steers to restock and feed sold to a cheaper trend of 10c to 15c/kg, with some quality related change.
The better quality yearling heifers to restock and feed were up to 17c/kg cheaper, while the secondary and plain quality heifers suffered greater falls.
With processors working to capacity there were cheaper trends through the grown cattle. The well finished heifers to process were 5c to 20c/kg cheaper.
The plainer quality and condition heifers also sold to cheaper trends. Weight of numbers through the system impacted the cow market.
The better 3 and 4 score cows were up to 30c/kg cheaper with some improved quality lots penned. There was more competition for plainer condition cows with that market much less affected.
