A spokesperson for Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) said the temporary closure from Monday, January 14 was necessary for safety reasons.
“Warrabungle Street will be temporarily closed for 12 months between Little Barber and New streets to ensure the safety of motorists and workers, with detours in place for cars and heavy vehicles,” the spokesperson said.
“Access to the closed section of road will be maintained for local businesses.”
Contractor Daracon Group will start work on Warrabungle Street at 7am on the morning of January 14 and is exptected to take 12 months to complete.
Activities will include vegetation clearing, installing boundary fencing and transferring large equipment to site will continue throughout January.
“Currently, the site offices and compound are being installed and are expected to be in operation by the end of January,” an RMS spokesperson said.
“Initial work will include rebuilding Warrabungle Street between Little Barber and New streets and relocating major services on Warrabungle Street near the location of the new bridge.”
Before Christmas 2018, houses at 2 and 4 Barber Street were demolished.
The long-awaited road-over-rail bridge will enable an uninterrupted flow of traffic and provide a suitable route for heavy vehicles and easy access to all parts of town for emergency services.
Daracon will carry out works between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and 8am-1pm on Saturdays.
An RMS spokesperson said the project was scheduled for completion in mid-2021.
