It was an honour and a privilege in March to be appointed Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment. This role only adds to the rich and rewarding experience of being Member for the Parkes electorate, this year marking the eleventh since I joined parliament.
While it has been a wonderful year for many, it has been a challenging time for graziers and farmers contending with the ongoing drought, with flow-on effects extending to local business and industry.
Though Mother Nature has been unrelenting, it is pleasing to see community spirit alive and well with many people and community groups getting behind our farmers and local businesses in a show of support. I urge farmers to apply for the government support measures available, and I hope widespread, plentiful rain comes soon for those who need it most in the Gunnedah region and beyond.
This year I have thoroughly enjoyed spending time right across my electorate, which is now four times larger than it was in 2007.
It is a privilege to represent the great town of Gunnedah, and given the opportunity, I am very much looking forward to continuing my work as your local member post-election time.
I would like to wish you all a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
- Parkes MP Mark Coulton
