A Quirindi High School student has topped the state in a HSC subject, and is already well on his way to a bright future after taking full advantage of an industry-based program.

Nicholas Hamblin was dux of the class in VET Metal Engineering after burning the oxy torch at both ends while combining traditional subjects with a School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) for his HSC.
“It’s really good – I didn’t expect it at all,” Nicholas said.
“I am very passionate about metal work, it’s what I love doing.”

Nicholas used the SBAT program to also complete an apprenticeship and Certificate II with the Soil Conservation Service, but is now on the look-out for a new apprenticeship in metal engineering.
“Hopefully topping the state helps me find a good apprenticeship,” he said.
“I would like to stay locally if I could, but will just see where it takes me.”
Teacher Wayne Miggins was not surprised to see his student at the top of the pile, while principal Ian Worley also congratulated the high achiever.
“This outcome is a testament to the outstanding work of an outstanding student and the dedication of teachers and staff,” Mr Worley said.
