The landcare group can purchase a new tractor and grass slasher after receiving almost $22,000 for through the 2018 Community Building Partnership Program.
Under Gunnedah Shire Council, GULG maintains a number of nature areas in Gunnedah, including Mullibah Lagoon, Cushan’s Reserve, Pensioners Hill and Porcupine Lookout.
The grant is good news for the volunteers who have been borrowing and hiring equipment for a number of years and even using their own personal gear.
“It’s great because we manage quite a lot of open space on behalf of council,” member George Truman said.
“With a tractor and slasher we can carry out maintenance in a more timely fashion.
“Having the right resources and equipment also encourages new membership.”
Over the years, the group has made a concerted effort to increase access to Gunnedah’s reserves, and planted numerous trees to create shade.
“We want to maintain [the spaces] and encourage people to utilise them,” Mr Truman said.
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson said the Community Building Partnership Program was “grassroots funding in the truest form” and would help GULG to continue to make an important contribution to the community.
