Rural crime officers have taken charge of the massive theft which occurred at Somerton on the weekend.

The 25 tonnes was stolen from the property off the Oxley Highway during a 45-minute period on Saturday.

Police said a red and silver prime mover that was towing a red and silver tipper grain trailer was parked at the property between 12.30 and 1.15pm and used an auger to load the grain.

Officers have been told a witness saw the grain being loaded but thought it was business as usual.

However, following investigations into the missing wheat haul, officers have determined no one had permission to load the wheat on Saturday.

Now, police are hoping locals might have seen the truck in question or anyone passing through the area might have dashcam footage that could help investigators.

Officers are appealing for anyone with cameras or dash cam footage of trucks travelling in the Somerton area and the Oxley Highway between midday and 2pm on Saturday, November 17.

Anyone with information on the theft or who has dash cam footage is urged to contact rural crime investigators at Tamworth Police Station on 6768 2999.

Meanwhile, rural crime police are searching for 20 cattle stolen from a property near Moree.

Twenty head of mixed Santa weaners were taken from the Coolatai farm on November 12. 

Police have been told the weaners were up to 300kg in weight with a ‘D’ brand on the rump and a key hole earmark in the left ear.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the cattle or who saw the theft is urged to contact Moree rural crime investigators.
