The charity ride raised more than $6000 and is driven by former Gunnedah man Wayne Irwin who has lost both a brother and a sister to cancer. Cancer survivors and cancer patients were among the group.
It is the second year that revheads have taken a roadtrip in support of cancer research, taking in little towns along the way.
This year’s route was 400-kilometre return, departing from Gunnedah and taking in Coonabarabran, Tooraweenah via the National Park and Binnaway before returning to Gunnedah via Tambar Springs and Mullaley. Riders came from towns including Toowoomba, Dubbo, Forbes, Sydney and Grafton.
Mr Irwin said the ride was “absolutely awesome” and it was great to get out on the road after months of preparation.
“I had a ball,” he said.
“Everyone loved it.”
Mr Irwin said once again the small villages had put on a great spread.
“The lunch that the Binnaway Show Society put on was spectacular. It was a top set-up,” he said.
“Everyone’s coming back next year.”
Mr Irwin said numbers weren’t very strong a week before but that turned around as the day approached.
“At the end of the day, I thought maybe 80 people but then I had phone call, after phone call, after phone call the week before [and] we had about 30 people rock up on the day,” he said.
Mr Irwin already has a tentative date for next year – October 12 – and is in the process of setting up a website to make registration either.
He said what drove him to continue the charity ride was “the people that show up and say how good an event it is and ‘We want to do it again’.”
