A group of Gunnedah riders made the trip to the Tamworth Velodrome last week to take part in ‘Friday night under lights’.
The Gunnedah riders took on some of Tamworth’s best on the steeply banked oval tracks for the Tamworth Cycle Club’s mixed format.
The races included scratch and handicap events as well as the heads and tails crowd pleaser, with racing drawing quite a few spectators.
In the seniors, former professional cyclist Sam Spokes edged out Ben Clarke and Phil Kelaher to take the 20-lap scratch race, while Luke O’Connor pipped Conor Noonan and Jeremy Deasey in the 15-lap handicap race.
Clarke was first in the elimination race, followed by Kelaher and Peter Butler.
In the three-lap junior handicap, Joshua Deasey edged out Tom and Nash Carlyon, while the Carlyon’s took first and second in the two-lap handicap with Isobel O’Connor third.
In the junior time trials, Tom Carlyon had the quickest time 27.70, followed by Joshua Deasey 28.20, Isobel O’Connor 29.20, Nash Carlyon 30.30, Eliza O’Connor 33.70, Ashton Kelaher 45.60 and Faith Kelaher 57.10.
The first night under lights racing event follows Monday night training sessions the club has been running for juniors, and now seniors.
Racing will return to the velodrome on Friday from 6.30pm.
