Liverpool Plains Shire Council is putting a strong focus on youth during a series of upcoming community events in partnership with its sister city Blacktown.
Solo sailor Jessica Watson will headline the International Youth Connect Forum on October 27 from 10am at the Catholic Church hall.
“There will be an address by Jessica Watson OAM who at 16 years of age became the youngest person to sail solo and unassisted around the world,” Liverpool Plains Shire Council mayor Andrew Hope said.
“She has won many awards including Young Adventurer of the Year and 2016 Young Australian of the Year and is a great role model for young people.”
From 9am, the Sister City Games will see Quirindi sports teams verse visitors in games of soccer, netball and rugby at Longfield Park and basketball in Quirindi High School’s auditorium.
From 2pm, Play School presenter Alex Papps will host a free show aimed at pre-school children and suitable for up to 10 years of age. The show will be held at the Royal Theatre Quirindi on October 27.
“We are delighted that Alex Papps, known to many younger people for his role on television through Play School will present a free show the kids will love. Alex will also be known to the wider community as a former Home and Away star,” Cr Hope said.
“As a prelude to the weekend events, Blacktown City Council is sponsoring a visit by Rap 4 Change, a sing and dance group from their city, and they’ll perform at Wallabadah, Werris Creek and Walhallow public schools on October 25, at no cost to the schools.”
October 27 will culminate in the Hangi dinner at the Royal Theatre from 6.30pm.
“Apart from a good feed, there’ll be entertainment by local and Blacktown performers and proceedings will be emceed by Alex Papps with a Q&A with Jessica Watson,” Cr Hope said.
“On behalf of our community, I again express our sincere thanks to Blacktown City Council for their financial assistance in making the Hangi weekend possible and the many other ways they assist their sister city.”
“Come along to Hangi events, make our friends welcome and enjoy their company.”
