Former local Wayne Irwin launched the ride in 2017 in memory of his brother Dale who lost his battle with cancer in 2016. He has also lost one of his sisters to cancer.

Last year, the ride raised more than $8000 for Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) and Mr Irwin is hoping to make it “even bigger and better” in its second year on October 27.

“Most of us have either lost loved ones and close friends or know someone fighting with the bastard cancer,” he said.

“The Let’s Beat the Bastard Ride is a day out on our bikes (or car) in support of those suffering from or who have lost loved ones to this bastard of a disease.

“Hopefully with a few donations from all we can raise a few dollars for cancer research.”.

The 400-kilometre round trip departs from Kitchener Oval in Gunnedah at 9am and takes in Coonabarabran, Tooraweenah via the National Park, Binnaway for lunch, then returning to Gunnedah via Tambar Springs and Mullaley. 

“Anyone is welcome to attend and if you don’t have a bike you are welcome to tag along in your car,” Mr Irwin said.

The cost for the day is $60, which will include a Beat the Bastard Ride patch, ACRF ribbon, lunch at Binnaway and a barbecue for dinner at the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club. All drinks are at the participant’s own expense. The cost of attending just the dinner is $30 and includes a meal, ride patch and ACRF ribbon.

Local band The Budgie Smugglers will entertain during the dinner and a raffle will be held with some prizes including a 6x4 box trailer, motorcycle cover, Penrite gear, Holden gear, Valvoline packs and tools. Raffle tickets are $2 and can be purchased from the bowling club, Browns Tyre Service and Gunnedah Auto Pro.
