Quirindi High School has two new state champions after school captain Lachlan Tydings, and Lacie Quigley won gold at last week’s State CHS Athletics Championships in Sydney.
Tydings threw 52.06m to win the 17+ boys discus while Quigley kicked away in the final lap to finish first in the 14-years girls 1500m in a time of 4mins 45.37secs.
It completed her set after winning bronze in the 14-years-and-under 3000m and silver in the 14-years 800m.
In the lead-up Quigley had taken out the 14/15-years time trial at the School Sport Australia Cross-Country Championships.
The Year 9 student caused some confusion when she was the first female in an open field of runners including those in the under 20-years categories to finish, and was originally handed the gold medal for the under-16-years age group.
“They quickly realised that Lacie was running in the 14/15-years and gave her the gold for that age group,” her mother Megan Quigley said.
Quigley completed the 2km course in 6mins 37secs and was happy with her run.
“I was really pleased with the result as I had a few injuries in the lead up but I’m continuing on my path because I love to run,” she said.
Quirindi school-mates Georgie Auld, Caitlyn Etheridge and Ashya McCrae also qualified for the North West to compete at Homebush.
