Real Life Church is hosting the drought relief event in conjunction with Northwest Church in the grounds of Carinya Christian School on September 22 from 3pm.

The free event will feature a jumping castle, face painting, craft tent, slushies, pamper tent for women, man cave for the men and a barbecue.

Gary Ernst from Real Life Church said the church had been looking for a drought-stricken community to bless and spoke to Northwest Church’s Bron Bonnell who suggested Gunnedah.

“I’m a country kid. I grew up in Dungog on a dairy farm, so to me, I know when times are tough and what it’s like,” he said. 

“We can’t send bales of hay but we can come to town and help.”

Mr Ernst said it was a good chance for farming families to “de-stress, get away from the mundane of feeding cattle and watering cattle and come and do something as a family that costs absolutely nothing”.

“I want the dads to come with their families – leave the farm for a few hours and have a bit of fun with the family and let off the steam and do the things they would normally do if they had the finances to do them,” he said.

Mr Ernst said locals would also have the opportunity to have a chat and share their difficulties.

“I remember my dad was like this. He wouldn’t talk a lot but he’d talk to a stranger, he’d download,” he said.

Event volunteer Annette Parks said they wanted farming families to “come in and have a day where they get looked after”.
