More than 2000 head of cattle were up for bids, up more than 200 head from the previous week’s sale.
Gunnedah stock agent Guy Gallen said the fist sale of spring was “very encouraging.”
“There was a number of promising signs at the sale,” Mr Gallen said.
“Yearlings brought some good money throughout the day and those that were at the lot feed weight really went quite well.”
Store cattle showed the biggest improvement at the September 4 sale up by 20 per cent on the previous week.
“I was actually rather impressed with that to be honest,” Mr Gallen said.
“It does show that prices can sometimes be a bit inconsistent, but if you have a quality product you should still go well.”

Manilla stock agent Sam Plevey said there was plenty of opportunities for buyers.
“Personally I think there are some unbelievable opportunities available to buyers looking to stock up on weaner sized cattle,” Mr Plevey said.
“The fact there are so many of those cattle that are in between the 150 to 300kg range gives people a real chance of making some money.
“Plus there are so many quality weaner cattle about at the moment it’s perfect for restockers.”
Mr Gallen said calves had also improved in price on recent weeks.
“It doesn’t seem too long ago that we were talking about calves being bought for $20 or less,” he said.
“But, while there was a few pens there at the sale, they had improved to be going for more like $130 a head.
“While that is still pretty cheap, it is certainly a lot more promising than it was a few weeks ago."
