The pre-school invited Mary Ranken Child Care Centre, Winanga-li Aboriginal Child and Family Centre and GS Kidd School to join in a fun morning of dancing, eating and cooking damper over the fire.
The Welcome to Country was spoken by Gunnedah High School student Lillie Bird, with fellow students and Girls Academy member Marissa Hobden raising the Torres Strait Islander flag. Tyson Small from GS Kidd raised the Australia flag and Stephanie Cameron from Gunida Gunyah raised the Aboriginal flag.
The official NAIDOC cake was cut by Aunty Pam Silver and the youngsters lined up for a slice.
Acting director Kate Olsen, praised the work of Cherrie Seton who is Gunnedah Preschool’s Indigenous community engagement officer Cherrie Seton.
“Today and every day, Gunnedah Preschool recognises one very important person in our centre who consistently strives to embed Aboriginal culture into our service on a daily basis,” Ms Olsen said.
“Cherie Seton has gone above and beyond in strengthening our ties with the local Aboriginal community and for this we will forever be grateful. Because of Cherrie, ceremonies like the one we celebrate here today are possible.”
