The church was notified of its success for a $46,000 grant in partnership with Homes North in late 2017. The funding was awarded for an outdoor cover and a raised community garden on TurningPoint’s grounds in South Street.
TurningPoint’s Neville Mammen said there was a delayed process in receiving the money, so the project got off to a slow start but is now well and truly under way.
On Monday, concrete was poured and the uprights for the outdoor cover were established. The raised garden beds are being placed and an irrigation system will be installed.
“Now that we’ve got our first mobilised funding transfer, we’ll be able to continue on,” Mr Mammen said.
“It’s all going ahead and I’m planning working bees.
“There’s enthusiasm to finally see something happening.”
The garden beds will be planted with vegetables and flowers and will provide Homes North clients with a meeting place that’s independent to tenant housing.
The idea was born from a meeting with tenants who discussed the need for a place they can go that is safe and peaceful, where they can have a cuppa, and hold meetings, forums and social activities.
Mr Mammen is hoping the work will be finished by October/November.
“It’s a faith project,” he said.
“People have the opportunity to contribute… and get their fingernails dirty.”
