Gunnedah United Hawks reserve grade coach Blake Small couldn’t help but feel like Saturday’s match against Souths United was the one that got away.

The final score read 3-2 in favour of Souths but not before the Hawks had led.
The Hawks were up 1-0 at the half-time break but a slow start to the second half ultimately cost the Gunnedah outfit.

“We were up 1-nil at half-time and then we came back out and didn’t switch on,” Small said.
“They scored two quick goals and then we drew back with another one and it was 2-all with about 10 minutes to go.
“We just made a silly mistake and they punished us for it.
“We should have won that. We were just lacking after half-time.”
Small said slow starts to halves had been a problem for the Hawks but the coach wasn’t too disappointed with how the season has panned out so far.
They sit in sixth place with two wins from six matches.
“This season has gone really well for us. The games we have lost haven’t been by much and it’s mainly due to players not being available,” Small said.
“That’s been our biggest problem. We haven’t had a full strength team on the park.
“We should nearly be full strength this weekend.”
It comes at a perfect time as the United Hawks gear up to take on local rivals Gunnedah FC.
Players coming in will boost both first – who had a 4-0 loss to Souths on Saturday – and reserve grade sides.
Small said the players were keen to take on a pair of strong Gunnedah FC lineups.
“This year we’re looking forward to it because I know we’ve got a competitive side to play against them,” Small said.
