Mackenzie started competing this year against dancers come from all over Australia. Entrants do five dances – highland fling, swords, Seann Triubhas, lilt and the flora.
She went to Grafton on the June long weekend and came home with a second in swords, third in lilt and third in Seann Triubhas. Her first competition was at McLean on the Easter long weekend and she received with a second in flora and a third in Seann Triubhas.
The 10-year-old has been dancing for four years and attributes her passion to her Scottish heritage and her late great-great uncle Bill Finlay.
Mackenzie puts in a lot of practice and is thankful to her teachers Heather Welch, Michelle Brooks and Kim Stone for all their hard work in getting her ready for the competitions.
Mackenzie performs dancing displays with other local highland dancers and quite often dances to the tunes of the Plains Pipes and Drums. On July 7, they will perform at the annual Aberdeen Highland Games.
