The Mature Aged Eisteddfod has been part of the program for a number of years, giving senior citizens a chance to read poetry, sing items and dance to music.

It is the first cab off the ranks in the music section of the eisteddfod, which will round off with the Choral Championships on Sunday. 

Mackellar Care Services once again hosted the Golden Oldies event, with both the Alkira and Apex campuses involved, plus regulars from Eloura retirement village in Quirindi. A dance video was also received by Maroba Caring Communities in Newcastle.

Highlights of the morning included Eloura’s fun rendition of Glenn Miller’s Chattanooga Choo Choo, complete with costumes and actions.

Gunnedah’s Jim Foley also got the crowd going with his musical prowess on the button accordian. Mr Foley’s tunes for a quick step, waltz and bush dance even got adjudicators Robert White and Lizzy Blake on their feet. 

Mrs Blake said it was fantastic to hear songs from the past and “seeing the looks on people’s faces” was lovely. 

“As we get older, those old tunes bring back wonderful memories,” she said.

“It must bring you much joy, and everyone who listens to you.”
