MEMBERS of Gunnedah Fire and Rescue 314 are getting set to throw their doors open to the public on Saturday.

The team are welcoming the community to come and visit the station as part of a statewide Fire and Rescue open day initiative.

Fire and Rescue stations across the state will hold open days to promote the work of their local firefighters and learn about fire safety.

Gunnedah Fire and Rescue Captain David Welch said the day was a chance for the community to get to know their local firefighters and see that they do much more than just fight fires.

“This year we are reminding people about the wide range of our capabilities Fire and Rescue has to offer aside from fighting fires,” Captain Welch said.

“From chemical spills, car accidents and natural disasters to education, prevention and humanitarian relief, across the state, across the country and even overseas, our firefighters are prepared for anything, anywhere, anytime.”

Captain Welch encouraged the community to learn more about their local Fire and Rescue service and fire safety.

“Why not come along to Gunnedah Fire Station this open day and hear about all the things we do in the community,” he said.

“Children will be able to see the fire engines and firefighting equipment up close, always a highlight of this much-anticipated day.

“They’ll also be able to take home a “Brigade Kids” activity booklet, which teaches them vital fire safety lessons.”

The Barber Street fire station will be open from 10am to 2pm on Saturday May 19.
