Gunnedah saleyards: further reduction in numbers

There was a fair supply of yearlings, while well-finished heavy grown steers were almost non-existent. The quality of the offering was fair to good, however the condition for the most part was on the leaner side. There were some pens of well-finished heavy weight cows. 

Demand was weaker through the young cattle from all sectors. Good quality young cattle were least affected in a market of mostly cheaper trends. There was significant discounting for secondary and plain quality young cattle. Better quality weaner steers sold to a cheaper trend of up to 14c/kg. There was little change for the better quality weaner heifers to restock, with an isolated pen of high quality heifers showing a slight improvement.

There was an improvement in the quality of the medium weight yearling steers that accounted for a positive price change. The heavy feeder steers sold to a cheaper trend of 4c/kg on the highly sought after lots. Secondary quality cattle attracted greater discounts.

There was little change in the market trend for medium weight yearling heifers showing quality, while the plainer lots were quite a bit cheaper.

Drought conditions were reflected in the condition of the heavy grown streers, those not suitable to lot feeders sold to a much cheaper trend. There were cheaper trends through the cow market. The well-finished heavy weight cows saw a cheaper trend of 5c to 14c/kg.
