GUNNEDAH police are warning locals to be on the lookout for counterfeit money.

The warning follows a recent spate of counterfeit $20 and $50 notes being used in local fast food restaurants in recent weeks.
Police say the counterfeit notes are easily identifiable as they have Asian writing on them and are made of paper instead of plastic.
A police spokesperson told The Namoi Valley Independent the consequences of manufacturing counterfeit currency were serious.
“All of the notes handed into police will be passed on to the Australian Federal Police for forensic examination,” the spokesperson said.
“We are seeing these notes used in local businesses with high money turn-over where they won’t easily be noticed and where it is easy to leave the scene quickly.
“It is a federal offence and the consequences of using counterfeit currency are severe, if anyone receives a counterfeit note please drop into your local police station.”

The re-emergence of the counterfeit notes follows counterfeit $100 notes recently being used in Tamworth and other counterfeit notes being used in Gunnedah earlier in 2018.
Anyone with information regarding counterfeit currency is urged to contact Gunnedah Police Station or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
