This year there are nine entrants in the annual showgirl competition, with five senior entries and four junior showgirl entries.
The 2018 Gunnedah Showgirl, runner-up and Junior Showgirl will be announced and sashed at the opening of the art and photography section on Friday night. The NVI will livestream the announcement to its Facebook page.
Showgirl convenor Carolyn Bishop is thrilled that local girls are getting involved in the 130th Gunnedah Show.
The entrants will be judged on their general knowledge, character, speaking ability and knowledge of rural issues. This year’s judges are Caroline Anderson, Juliana McArthur and Tony Blake.
Jessica Moore is 17 years old and attends Gunnedah High School.
The Kelvin girl has aspirations to get into communications or teaching after she graduates, with the end goal of working overseas. She is also passionate about cooking and horse riding.
Jessica entered the showgirl competition to get involved in her community.
Olivia Carter is a 17-year-old from Kelvin who attends Calrossy Anglican School.
Olivia enjoys water skiing, tennis, sewing, reading, art, cricket, and spending time with family and friends.
The Year 12 student entered the competition to “meet new people” and “gain a valuable experience”.
Merryn Riley is a Gunnedah girl who is 18 years of age.
The Year 12 student attends St Mary’s College and enjoys dancing, art, cooking and drama.
In her entry form, Merryn said it was important to support our local show.
“I have wonderful memories of the Gunnedah Show and I hope I will be around for my children to experience the same,” she wrote.
Edwina Carrigan is a Boggabri girl, 17 years of age.
She is currently in Year 12 at Calrossy Anglican School and is passionate about tennis, personal health and fitness, and her family’s farm.
Edwina entered the competition to “meet and network with like-minded rural women”.
“In our 130th year, it is important to continue the showgirl competition,” she wrote on her entry form.
