"After almost 6 months of groundworks and construction undertaken by Daracon Group, we are excited to confirm that the Blackjack Creek Flood Mitigation Project is nearing completion and is expected to be finalised by June 2018, on time and on budget,” Gunnedah Shire Council’s planning and development manager Carolyn Hunt said.
Work on the $3.2 million project began in November 2017, with the aim of protecting Wandobah Road from future flooding by creating channel banks, deepening, widening and realigning 1.9 kilometres of Blackjack Creek, between McCalls Road and Oxley Highway, to increase capacity.
"The project has been progressing along nicely, with very minimal downtime due to dry weather conditions, meaning contractors have been able to keep the project moving forward at a good pace, and continue to hit critical dates, which is great news for the community, and for the bottom line,” Ms Hunt said.
"Over the past months, the heavy construction works have been our focus, with the channel and storm water drainage works now complete. We will now focus on site rehabilitation and revegetation, including the hydro mulching of the channel, landscaping, completion of internal road works, signage and consolidation of lots.
"The purpose of undertaking this major project is to reduce the impact of flooding from Blackjack Creek to properties and residences in the Wandobah Road area, and we are confident that the works undertaken is likely to result in welcomed changes to the flood classification of some, but not all, properties located in the area. Once grant funding is secured, we plan to review the Floodplain Management Risk Management Study and Plan to reflect works completed."
