Over the years, Palmer has held countless roles within the Gunnedah Women’s Golf club and at the club’s AGM she was awarded life membership.
Women’s golf captain Val Billsborough has known Palmer for over 40 years and said the new life member was “definitely” deserving of the accolade.
”That’s why she got life membership. She’s probably played for 30-odd years now,” Billsborough said of Palmer.
“She was president of the ladies club, I think, twice and I think she might have been captain as well.
“She’s been on the golf board herself and she’s been a volunteer, and still is, doing all the raffles and that sort of thing.
“She’s also been a patroness for a number of years, too.”
Along with all those roles with the club, Palmer has also found time to get a few rounds in.
“She’s in her 80s and she’s still active,” Billsborough said.
”At the moment, probably in the last 12 months, she goes in a cart but she still holds her own out there.”
At the AGM last October, Palmer was named to be a patroness in 2018 alongside June Doubleday.
Coral Lorimer was elected president, Billsborough was re-elected as women’s golf captain with Alison Dawson-Bee named secretary and Joan Bray treasurer.
The 2018 season gets underway next week with golfers competing in division one, two and three. New playing members are invited to join in. Any women golfers who cannot play during the week but would like to play on Saturday should put their name on the time sheet available at the pro shop.
The opening competition is a nine-hole fourball stableford event draw for partners on Tuesday, February 20. Registration from 8.30am with a tee off time of 9am.
Ground captains are Jacinta Stanley and Alison Dawson-Bee. Mary Gregson is asked to provide the raffle prize and players are asked to provide a plate for lunch. Any players not participating are invited to the official opening and lunch at 12pm.
Thursday’s competition will see a nine-hole par event contested. Ground captains are Coral Lorimer and Kay Clarke.
Nominations are now open for the annual picnic day, the first major event on the golfing calendar. It will be an 18-hole fourball best ball stableford competition to be held on Tuesday, March 6 with a 9am shotgun start.
Players are reminded to arrange a partner for the event.
