Mr Groth’s contract was set to expire in October 2018 and it was resolved at December’s council meeting that GSC would offer him a contract extension, which came into effect on January 8.
Gunnedah shire mayor Jamie Chaffey said Mr Groth was both relieved and excited to be offered a contract extension.
“It was great to see not only the excitement in Eric’s face when I gave him the news of the extension but also the relief as to me that really shows how much he cares and loves his job,” Cr Chaffey said.
“Eric grew up in Gunnedah, has family and roots here and this is a town he is very passionate about.”

Cr Chaffey said the timing of the contract extension will mean the general manger will be still in the role after the next council election.
“Having a person with his abilities and experience as a resource will be invaluable for a new council or any new-comers to council,” he said.
“His leadership has been vital at times and it’s exciting to see what Eric has accomplished in his first term.”
Cr Chaffey said Mr Groth’s leadership abilities help bring “stability” to the organisation.
“I know a lot of people within the organisation even those in high positions look to Eric for strong leadership and his rock solidness,” he said.
“I really look forward with excitement to the next five years, as I know he has been vital to our success so far and I know he will help us continue to achieve our goals as a part of our strategic plan in the future.”
