Of the 1200 head under the hammer at the sale, 600 of them were steers along with 400 heifers and 200 cows, which was almost double the yarding of the last sale of 2017.
Boggabri stock agent Guy Gallen said recent hot weather saw a higher number of “lighter steers” at the sale.
“Out of the 600 steers we had about 100 odd steers there today that were under 200 kilograms,” Mr Gallen said.
“We haven’t seen that for a while but I think as the hot weather continues without rain that will continue to happen over the next few weeks.”
Mr Gallen said the sale was a “great” way to start the year.
“So heifers remained firm on the sale before Christmas, lighter-weight steers were a little dearer, export cattle was a little cheaper but all-in-all it’s been a great start to 2018,” he said.
The next Gunnedah fat cattle sale will kick off from 8am on Tuesday January 16.
