Hubbard – the second oldest playing member at the Gunnedah Golf Club behind Ron Whiteman – took up golf in his 40s and now, at 90, he still gets out to play three times a week.
“In my particular case it’s my outing. It helps fill in the days for me,” Hubbard said.
“I just love the exercise, the competition, and the fact that you have a chance to have a yarn to people of your own vintage.”
In those close-to-50 years playing golf, Hubbard, who hits off roughly 20, has seen plenty.
From watching the golf course pop up as a youngster.
“I remember as a kid them setting up the course. It used to be a resting paddock for stock and station agents and had very little grass on it,” Hubbard said.
To seeing an incredible amount of playing partners drain a hole-in-one.
“I’ve been in six groups when someone has hit one,” he said.
“My turn hasn't arrived yet. I’ve gotten very close – about 30 centimetres away.”
As far as Hubbard’s own accomplishments on the course go, a feat achieved just a few years ago sticks out.
On Saturday, December 13, 2014, Hubbard, then 87, carded the best score of the day, 41 points, and achieved the rare distinction of shooting a score better than his age with 86 strokes.
“That’s certainly one I remember,” he said.
Hubbard is also thankful of the course Gunnedah has.
“Gunnedah is extremely lucky to have a beautiful course in the middle of town. It’s a great asset,” he said.
