Captain Richard Day and Major Gaye Day are still been hitting the road, delivering a hamper to Narrabri on Friday and one last hamper on Christmas Eve.

Every year, the Salvos put in a mammoth effort to help those in need with strong backing from the community.

Major Day said there were many donations, which were very much needed this year.

“I think there was a greater demand this year,” she said.

“There were a lot of people we hadn’t met before.

“This is probably the first year we’ve run out of food and toys.”

The Days said 250 kids in more than 180 families have received toy hampers. Through the Bless a Family This Christmas initiative, 27 families have received food hampers, up from 17 last year when it was first introduced. Gunnedah Shire Council, Gunnedah and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Pacific National, Mullaley Public School P&C, Northwest Church Gunnedah, and Ray White Fleming and Ross are among those who supported the initiatives.

Recipients of the Bless a Family initiative are often nominated by community members and have no idea until the Salvos turn up at their door bearing gifts. The Days said responses included shock and many tears.

“They were overwhelmed,” Major Gaye Day said.

“There were quite a few people who were shocked that someone from the community would help them.”

Captain Day said a lot of the recipients commented that the gifts came at “the perfect time”.

The Gunnedah Salvation Army building in Tempest Street and family store in Chandos Street will be closed until January 15, 2018.
